Don Austin

Don Austin’s poem “Notes (toward a poem about play)” won CBC’s poetry face-off for Newfoundland in 2005. It appeared, in a suitably playful format, from the Goat in 2009. Don’s hypertext story “Ned After Snowslides” gives a taste of his wit and inventiveness; it was the first “born-digital book” to be hosted in Special Collections department of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Library.

Painter and award-winning book artist, Tara Bryan has contributed in some way to every production of Running the Goat. Until fall 2004, she generously gave use of her printing facilities, and she has kindly offered her expertise and experience to every publication of the press.

Tara’s linocuts are featured in the first edition of Three Servings; she’ll be doing some new illustrations for the second edition, forthcoming in 2010. She also designed, illustrated and constructed the game board/book Notes (toward a poem about play) – text by Don Austin – which the Goat published in November of 2009.

Tara also serves on the Goat’s advisory board.

A fine poet and critic, Mark Callanan is the author of “Turk’s Gut Wolf” – the second in our poemphlet series. Mark is the editor of Riddle Fence, Newfoundland’s newest cultural journal.

Philip Dinn is a singer, drummer, writer and actor; a founding member of Newfoundland’s renowned folk rock band Figgy Duff and of the theatre/dance troupe Sheila’s Brush, Dinn is also a fine storyteller. He worked with Andy Jones on Peg Bearskin, which was initially part of “Jack Five Oh,” a theatrical gathering of Newfoundland folktales to mark the 50th anniversary of the province’s confederation with Canada. “Peg Bearskin” and other stories from that play can be found on the Jack Five Oh website.

Will Gill

Will Gill is a painter, sculptor, photographer and videographer; he provided an image for “December”, the third in the Goat’s poemphlet series. His work has won awards and rave reviews regionally, nationally and internationally.

Photographer and printer John Haney helped in the print studio off and on from 2005 until 2009, when he and his partner Amanda Jernigan relocated to Sackville, New Brunswick. John was a founding member of BAANAL, and helped with the design and printing of Dog’s Breakfast, the group’s recipe card collection—you can find details about that on the Ephemera page of this site.
Actor, director, storyteller and writer, Andy Jones is a Newfoundland treasure. He collaborated on the picture book adaptations of Peg Bearskin (with Philip Dinn and Elly Cohen) and The Queen of Paradise’s Garden (with Darka Erdelji); his monologue “Boiled Dinner” forms part of Three Servings. In 2010 the Goat will have the great pleasure of working with Andy again on another Jack tale.

Visit Andy’s website to learn more about the puppet play version of The Queen of Paradise’s Garden, his one-man shows, his film work and his many contributions to Newfoundland’s theatre and artistic communities.

Alison's poem "December" is the third in the Goat's poemphlet series; the accompanying art is by Will Gill.

Veselina Tomova

Artist, illustrator, graphic designer, printmaker, Veselina Tomova has been an artistic force in Newfoundland since she arrived here from Bulgaria in the 1980s. She is co-owner, with Vessela Brakova, of Vis-à-vis Graphics. She was the graphic designer for The Queen of Paradise’s Garden, and will be working with the Goat again on Andy Jones and Darka Erdelji’s next Jack tale collaboration.

Veselina is also on the Goat’s advisory board.
